I can’t even…! This was just… amazing!This is truly the book that got me back into reading again after a year or two of just being too busy to start new books, or continue old ones. The Hunger Games is a real page-turner, with constant suspense, and a relatable love story that wasn’t soppy and sickening.Plot:This book is a dystopian, set in the future, where very little of North America is actually inhabited. What little of it is inhabited, is divided into districts, 1-12, ruled by the controlling Capitol.The protagonist of the story is Katniss Everdeen who, on top of living in the worst treated district, also comes from the Seam – the hard working area inhabited by coal miners.The Hunger Games occur once a year, and are there to remind the people of the districts the extent of the power the Capitol has over them. They involve taking a boy and a girl, between the ages of 12 and 18, from each district - 24 in total. These 24 ‘tributes’ are made to fight to the death in an arena of the Capitol’s choosing.This year, Katniss ends up being one of the tributes, along with a boy, Peeta Mellark. Thus begins an epic story of survival, protest, and unrequited love.Characters:The characters are excellent and well thought out, with interesting backstories which add strength to their actions in the present. I very much enjoyed Suzanne Collin’s writing style, which was descriptive, yet totally engaging.For me, Katniss was a completely relatable character, finally a female lead who keeps her head! Instead, it is the male lead who directs the romance throughout the book, with Katniss taking a lot of convincing, leading the reader to believe her heart lies somewhere else (a concept I’m very much looking forward to exploring in the next book!)This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone, male or female, young and old!
